5 Tips on How to Avoid Common Data Project Issues
Sarah Wenman-Bateson, January 2020
I read so many articles about companies implementing huge data analytics and data management systems, however much of my work starts earlier than this. It is around companies not being certain how to do this or they are overwhelmed with the process. When these issues have been resolved we can start the project properly.
Here are my tips on have to get traction with a project and then how to keep it going:
-
1 Data is everywhere now, it is tempting to plan a system which will revolutionise your company. In reality, it will probably swamp your company and stall. My advice is always to start with a small well-defined project. Have a specific goal in mind and set out to achieve it in a set time frame. This is more likely to succeed, then build on it! Gaining finances and buy-in from colleagues will be much easier building on this success.
-
2 Data Quality, again, so many clients talk about the quality of their data. In truth, a large proportion of time in data projects can be absorbed discussing dirty data and cleansing it. It is vital to have a role in the company for this task. One person, responsible for cleaning the data and ensuring this is achieved across the business, is a great investment. Time will be saved for future projects, all visualisations and reports will be accurate and reliable.

3 Datastores, there is a tendency for companies to collect endless data, in case they need it. Leverage this data, it brings efficiencies to operations, finances and will clarify resolutions to business blockers. An unused datastore has no value.
-
4 Data Analytics, I see companies who spend huge amounts of money on building a system but the budget stops there. Ensure there is a role to use the data produced, a qualified analyst will unlock the value of the data. Without an ability to produce visualisations quickly the opportunity to benefit from the data will be lost. A good analyst will review the data regularly and adapt outputs.

5 Data tools, choose wisely here and take advice. Consultants generally have a wide pool of knowledge from working in many businesses. Invest in what is right for your business, it must have room for growth, but must not overwhelm the business, the overhead on price and complexity will cause the project to fail.
